Biographie:
Toshio Hosokawa, geboren 1955 in Hiroshima, kam 1976 nach Berlin und studierte dort Komposition bei Isang Yun. 1983–1986 setzte er seine Studien bei Klaus Huber an der Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg fort.
1980 nahm er zum ersten Mal an den Internationalen Ferienkursen für Neue Musik in Darmstadt teil. Seither werden seine Werke in Europa und Japan aufgeführt, gewannen internationale Anerkennung und erhielten zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Preise wie den 1. Preis des Kompositionswettbewerbs anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags der Berliner Philharmoniker (1982), den Arion Musikpreis (1984), den Kyoto Musikpreis (1988), den Rheingau Musikpreis (1998), den Duisburger Musikpreis (1998) sowie den musica viva-Preis der ARD und der BMW AG (2001). 2001 wurde er zum Mitglied der Akademie der Künste Berlin ernannt.
Zu fast allen wichtigen Festivals für zeitgenössische Musik wird Hosokawa als Komponist oder Dozent eingeladen, darunter: Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Biennale Venedig, Münchener Biennale, Internationale Sommerakademie der Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg, Internationale Festwochen Luzern, musica viva München, Klangspuren in Schwaz, Musica nova Helsinki, Centre Acanthes in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Warschauer Herbst.
Seit 2001 ist Toshio Hosokawa Musikalischer Leiter des Takefu International Music Festival, seit 2004 Gastprofessor am Tokyo College of Music. 2006/2007 war er ›composer in residence‹ beim DSO Berlin sowie 2006–2008 beim WDR Rundfunkchor Köln. 2006/2007 und 2008/2009 war Hosokawa ›Fellow‹ am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
