Das hr-Sinfonieorchester, eines der innovativsten und flexibelsten Ensembles in Deutschland, feiert im Jahr 2014 seinen 85. Geburtstag. Dank seines breiten stilistischen Repertoires und seiner vielfältigen Konzert- und CD-Aktivitäten genießt das Sinfonieorchester des Hessischen Rundfunks heute international großes Renommee.
Experimente und Entdeckungen im Bereich Neuer und Alter Musik und die Zusammenarbeit mit hochkarätigen Dirigenten und Solisten gehören ebenso selbstverständlich zu seinem künstlerischen Profil wie das grenzüberschreitende Music Discovery Project, die Mitwirkung beim Internationalen Dirigentenwettbewerb Sir Georg Solti sowie zahlreiche Kinder- und Jugendprojekte. Hans Rosbaud setzte als erster Dirigent des Orchesters ab 1929 entscheidende Akzente in der Pflege der musikalischen Tradition wie der zeitgenössischen Musik.
Nach dem Krieg engagierten sich Kurt Schröder und Winfried Zillig zunächst für den Wiederaufbau des Orchesters und sorgten für ein breitgefächertes Repertoire. Unter Dean Dixon, Eliahu Inbal, Dmitrij Kitajenko und Hugh Wolff feierte das Ensemble in den folgenden Jahrzehnten schließlich auch international große Erfolge. Von 2006 bis 2013 war der Este Paavo Järvi Chefdirigent des hr-Sinfonieorchesters. Als einer der profiliertesten Dirigenten seiner Generation stand er ebenfalls für musikalische Vielfalt und bereicherte das Orchester um neue spannende Facetten.
Designierter neuer Chefdirigent ab der Spielzeit 2014/15 ist Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
