Stefan Wolpe zählt zweifellos zu den interessantesten Gestalten der Musikgeschichte unserer Zeit. Seine Musik lässt sich kaum einer bestimmten Schule oder Richtung zuordnen, sie steckt voller Widersprüche. Die unterschiedlichsten Einflüsse und Tendenzen lassen sich heraushören, vom Jazz bis hin zu komplexesten Reihentechniken.
1902 in Berlin geboren, studiert er kurze Zeit bei Paul Juon und Franz Schreker. Ungleich wichtiger freilich sind die Impulse, die er von Ferruccio Busoni empfängt; vor allem aber wird er angeregt von bildenden Künstlern, am Bauhaus in Weimar, wo der junge Wolpe Kurse u.a. bei Johannes Itten und Paul Klee besucht, von Dadaisten wie Kurt Schwitters oder auch als Mitglied der Novembergruppe, einer radikalen Berliner Künstlervereinigung, für die Wolpe Konzerte organisiert und als Pianist auftritt.
1933 muss Wolpe auf der Flucht vor den Nazis Berlin verlassen. Er exiliert zunächst nach Jerusalem, wo er 1934–1938 als Lehrer am Konservatorium, zugleich als »musikalischer Instrukteur« im Kibbuz tätig ist. In die ersten Exiljahre fallen auch die wichtigen Begegnungen mit Anton Webern und Hermann Scherchen, bei denen Wolpe in Wien bzw. Brüssel kurze, aber intensive Studien betreibt.
1938 wandert er schließlich nach Amerika aus, lebt in New York und unterrichtet an verschiedenen Instituten. Er knüpft Kontakte zu Künstlern der verschiedensten Lager, etwa zu den abstrakten Expressionisten (wie Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko), aber auch zu Jazz-Musikern und Kollegen wie Edgard Varèse und John Cage.
Künstlerisch besonders fruchtbar war die Zeit am Black Mountain College, einer fortschrittlichen Kunstschule in den Bergen von North Carolina, wo er 1952–1956 lehrt und bedeutende Werke komponiert. Zwischen 1956 und 1963 folgen mehrere Europareisen mit regelmäßigen Besuchen als Dozent bei den Darmstädter Ferienkursen.
Die letzten Jahre sind überschattet durch die Parkinsonsche Krankheit, die 1963 diagnostiziert wird und an deren Folgen Wolpe 1972 stirbt.
