Claudia Barainsky gilt international als eine der vielseitigsten Künstlerinnen ihres Fachs. Sie studierte Gesang an der Hochschule der Künste in Berlin bei Ingrid Figur, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau und Aribert Reimann. 1994 gab sie ihr Debüt an der Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden; es folgte eine weltweite Karriere: Sie gastiert an den Opernhäusern in Amsterdam, Avignon, Brüssel, Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig, Köln, München, Stuttgart, Tokio und tritt bei internationalen Festivals auf: Bayreuther und Salzburger Festspiele, Lincoln Center Festival, Ruhrtriennale.
Ihr breitgefächertes Repertoire umspannt Werke aus allen Epochen des Musiktheaters. Konzertarien, die Sopran-Partien der großen Oratorien und die großen Orchesterlieder stehen ebenso auf ihrem Programm wie ausgefallene Werke, die Komponisten speziell für sie schreiben.
