Biographie:
| York Höller wurde in Leverkusen geboren und studierte 1963–70 in Köln u. a. bei Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Herbert Eimert und Alfons Kontarsky. Die Teilnahme an den Analyseseminaren von Pierre Boulez bei den Darmstädter Ferienkursen 1965 regte ihn zur Auseinandersetzung mit der seriellen Musik an. Nach vorübergehender Tätigkeit an der Bonner Oper arbeitete er 1971/72 am Studio für Elektronische Musik des WDR, dessen künstlerische Leitung er von 1990 bis 2000 innehatte. Eine Reihe von Werken, die durch die Synthese von instrumentalen/vokalen und elektronischen bzw. computergenerierten Klängen gekennzeichnet sind, machte Höller in den 1970er Jahren international bekannt. Mit der Einladung ans Pariser IRCAM nahm 1978 Höllers besondere Verbindung zum französischen Musikleben ihren Ausgang, die ihren vorläufigen Höhepunkt 1989 in der erfolgreichen, von der französischen Theater- und Musikkritik preisgekrönten Uraufführung von Der Meister und Margarita an der Opéra de Paris fand. In den 1980er Jahren vollendete Höller auch eine Anzahl rein akustischer Stücke, unter denen das Erste Klavierkonzert und das Orchesterwerk Magische Klanggestalt zu den meistgespielten zählen. Er lehrte über lange Jahre in Köln sowie in Freiburg, England und Finnland, wurde 1993 zum Professor für Komposition an die Berliner Hochschule für Musik »Hanns Eisler« und 1995 an die Musikhochschule Köln berufen. Höller erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, viele Werke entstanden in prominentem Auftrag, etwa Fanal für das Ensemble InterContemporain, Aura für das Chicago Symphony Orchestra oder Gegenklänge für das Ensemble Modern. 1999 komponierte Höller aus Anlass des Umzugs des Deutschen Bundestages nach Berlin das Orchesterwerk Aufbruch. In jüngerer Zeit entstanden Der ewige Tag für Chor, Orchester und Elektronik (2002), Klangzeichen für Klavier und Bläser (2003), Feuerwerk für 16 Instrumentalisten (2004), Fluchtpunkte für Flöte, Englischhorn, Klarinette, Klavier und Schlagzeug (2006) sowie das Orchesterstück Sphären (UA 2008 durch das WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln unter Semyon Bychkov), für das er 2010 den renommierten Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition erhielt. Neben zahlreichen weiteren internationalen Kompositionsaufträgen, Stipendien, Gastdozenturen und Auszeichnungen wurde Höller durch die Aufnahme in den Ordre des Arts et des Lettres der Französischen Republik geehrt. Seit 1991 ist er Mitglied der Berliner Akademie der Künste, seit 2006 Mitglied der Freien Akademie der Künste in Hamburg. Ein Buch über den Komponisten erschien zu seinem 60. Geburtstag in der Reihe »Musik der Zeit«. |
