Biographie:
Nikolaus Brass, 1949 in Lindau am Bodensee geboren, studierte zunächst Medizin sowie privat Komposition bei Peter Kiesewetter an der Musikhochschule in München. Sein Medizinstudium schloss er an der Freien Universität Berlin ab. Begleitend studierte er Komposition bei Frank Michael Beyer und später privat bei Helmut Lachenmann. Zwischen 1978 und 1986 besuchte er wiederholt die Darmstädter Ferienkurse, wo er auch mit Morton Feldman zusammentraf. Nachdem er zur Gaudeamus Muziekweek in den Niederlanden eingeladen worden war, begann er 1981 seine Kompositionen zu veröffentlichen.
Seitdem erfolgten zahlreiche Ur- und Erstaufführungen bei den wichtigsten Festivals für Neue Musik (u.a. Donaueschinger Musiktage, musica viva München, Ultraschall Berlin, ECLAT Stuttgart, Klangspuren Schwaz, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik). Neben Orchesterwerken wie Der Garten für vier Männerstimmen und Orchester (UA 2012 unter Peter Eötvös; musica viva) bilden Musik für Stimmen wie fallacies of hope – deutsches requiem, mit Textprojektionen aus dem Roman Die Ästhetik des Widerstands von Peter Weiss für 32 Stimmen (UA 2014, SWR Vokalensemble unter Florian Helgath; ECLAT) und Kammermusik die Schwerpunkte seines Schaffens. Zuletzt widmete Brass sich vermehrt szenischen Projekten (Uraufführung seines Kammermusiktheaters Sommertag nach dem gleichnamigen Drama von Jon Fosse, bei der Münchener Biennale 2014). Daneben ist er auch als Autor von Rundfunksendungen oder Zeitschriftenbeiträgen in Erscheinung getreten.
Nikolaus Brass erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen, u.a. den Musikpreis der Landeshauptstadt München im Jahr 2009. Seit 2014 ist er Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste.
