Biographie:
James Dillon, 1950 in Glasgow geboren, studierte in London Musik, Akustik und Linguistik. Als Komponist ist er Autodidakt. In den frühen 1970er Jahren studierte er indische Musik bei Punita Gupta. In den 1980er und frühen 1990er Jahren wurde Dillon immer wieder nach Darmstadt eingeladen, um neue Werke vorzustellen. 1982 erhielt er den Kranichsteiner Musikpreis, 1986 war er Gastdozent an der State University of New York in Stony Brooks.
Sein 1. Streichquartett wurde 1983 vom Arditti Quartet beim Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival uraufgeführt. Seitdem ist das Arditti Quartet dem Komponisten eng verbunden geblieben. Alle nachfolgenden Quartette Dillons wurden vom Arditti Quartet uraufgeführt und in ihr Konzertrepertoire aufgenommen.
James Dillon war Gastdozent an vielen Universitäten weltweit und erhielt den Titel »Distinguished International Visitor« der New York University (2001–02). 2003 wurde ihm die Ehrendoktorwürde der University of Huddersfield zuerkannt. Er lebt gegenwärtig in London und in Minneapolis und ist Professor für Komposition an der University of Minnesota.
