Das ICI Ensemble, gegründet 1999, arbeitete mit zahlreichen namhaften internationalen Improvisationskünstlern wie Vinko Globokar, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Pierre Favre, Johannes Bauer, Mary Oliver, George E. Lewis, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Lucas Niggli, Freddy Studer, Thomas Lehn, Phil Durrant, Franz Hautzinger und Joëlle Léandre.
»Mit der Gründung des ICI Ensembles schufen die Musiker sich und anderen scheuklappenfreien Musikern aus München eine Plattform, bei der man so ernsthaft wie spielerisch mit den Konzepten von freier Improvisation und kompositorischer Vorgabe umgehen kann. Die ästhetische Ausrichtung steckt bereits im Namen: ICI steht für International Composers and Improvisers.« (Harry Lachner, 2008)
Dass das ICI Ensemble in München Musikgeschichte schreibt, belegt die Formulierung Harry Lachners in seiner einstündigen SWR-Sendung über das ICI Ensemble vom 15. Mai 2008: »Unter dem Titel ›Internationale Begegnungen‹ werden Konzertreihen mit kleiner Ensemble-Besetzung veranstaltet, bei ›Composers in Dialogue‹ spielt die Großbesetzung, und bei ›Improvisierte Musik München‹ kommt es zu immer neuen Konstellationen bayerischer und Münchner Improvisationsmusiker. Niemand erwartet, dass München leuchtet … man ist ja schon mit einem Lebenszeichen zufrieden.
Und das liefert das ICI Ensemble in bemerkenswerter Weise: als Durchsetzungskraft des Widerständigen, als eine Neueröffnung eines Spielfeldes für die unangepasste, kreative Phantasie. Die Zeiten sind lange schon vorbei, da große Ensembles über einen langen Zeitraum hinweg finanziell abgesichert arbeiten konnten. Sie funktionieren heute nur als ›offenes Konzept‹, als punktuell auftauchende Formationen mit ständig wechselnden Mitgliedern.
Manchen, wie Barry Guys London Jazz Composers Orchestra oder Alexander von Schlippenbachs Globe Unity, gelingt dennoch eine kontinuierliche Arbeit über die Jahre hinweg. Das Münchner ICI Ensemble übertrifft diese beiden Groß-Ensembles aber an Flexibilität und musikalischer Vielfalt. Das ist natürlich dem Konzept geschuldet: denn das Spektrum der Gäste, die zu den ›Internationalen Begegnungen‹ oder als Impulsgeber für das Groß-Ensemble eingeladen werden, reicht von Vinko Globokar über Phil Durrant bis zur Komponistin Olga Neuwirth.«
