Biographie:
Toru Takemitsu, am 8. Oktober 1930 in Tokio geboren, besuchte von 1943 an die Keika Junior High School; im Alter von 16 Jahren beschloss er, Komponist zu werden. In der Nachkriegszeit hörte er im Rundfunk der amerikanischen Besatzer westliche Musik – neben Jazz vor allem klassische Musik von Debussy und Copland, aber auch von Schönberg.
Auch wenn Takemitsus Kompositionsstudien hauptsächlich autodidaktisch waren, suchte er den Kontakt zu herausragenden Lehrern: Toshi Ichiyanagi machte ihn mit der europäischen Avantgarde von Messiaen, Nono und Stockhausen vertraut; Fumio Hayasaka führte ihn an die Welt der Filmmusik heran und stellte den Kontakt zu dem Regisseur Akira Kurosawa her, für den Takemitsu mehrere Filmplots vertonte. Neben seinen musikalischen Studien interessierte sich Takemitsu auch für andere Künste wie moderne Malerei, Theater, Film und Literatur (insbesondere Lyrik). Sein kulturphilosophisches Wissen beruhte neben den eigenen Erfahrungen auf einem intensiven Gedankenaustausch mit Yasuji Kiyose.
1951 gründete Takemitsu zusammen mit anderen Komponisten und Vertretern aus verschiedenen Kunstbereichen die Gruppe Jikken Kobo (Experimenteller Workshop), deren avantgardistische Multimedia-Aktivitäten zunehmend Aufsehen erregten. Takemitsu lehrte Komposition an der Yale University und erhielt zahlreiche Gastprofessuren an Universitäten in den USA, Kanada und Australien. Er starb am 20. Februar 1996 in Tokio.
